The 2022 edition of the World Pool Championship, or 9-Ball Professional World Championship, has already been held at the MK Stadium sports facilities in Milton Keynes (United Kingdom). The championship, organized by Matchroom, holder of the rights of the most relevant Pocket Billiards (Pool) championships of the year, ended with the victory of Shane Van Boening, although he was very close. In this article we take a closer look at the results of the World Pool Championship.
World Pool Championship 2022 or 9 Ball World Championship
In this year’s edition of the World Pool Championship, the 128 best specialists from the five continents participated on a total of 16 game tables. The development of the competition could be followed by live streaming (specifically table number one on various payment platforms and table number two open for free on YouTube and Facebook).
Various players started as favorites for the title. For example, the reigning world champion and defending champion, the Austrian Albin Ouschan. But also other big champions, like the Scottish Jayson Shaw, the German Joshua Filler and the Asians Chang Jung-Lin and Ko Pin-Yi. Without forgetting other contenders such as the Spaniards David Alcaide and Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, holders of prestigious titles such as the World Pool Masters and the Derby City Classic respectively.
But finally, the title of the World Pool Championship was won by someone who is currently considered by many the best 9-ball player on the planet: the American from South Dakota, Shane Van Boening. In the past, this title had eluded him, despite being a top champion and holder nothing more and nothing less than five 9-Ball US OPEN, among many other top-level achievements.
The path to the title was not easy for Van Boening. The experienced finn and former world champion Mika Immonen had him very close to the elimination in last-32 round with a score of 10-3 down in a race to 11 match. But Immonen missed a decisive ball and Van Boening did not forgive, achieving a historic comeback with a final score up of 11-10. He needed 8 games in a row without error, quite a feat only within the very best.

The final match was played against the defending champion, the Austrian Albin Ouschan. It was very even from the start with both players developing a very solid game, until Van Boening showed his best offensive game to finally win 13-6.
